Later that night, Briseis sneaks into Achilles' quarters to kill him; instead, she falls for him and they become lovers.

Despite Hector's objections, Priam orders him to retake the Trojan beach by daybreak and force the Greeks home; the attack unifies the Greeks and the Myrmidons enter the battle.

Hector duels a man he believes to be Achilles and kills him, only to discover it was actually his cousin Patroclus. Distraught, both armies agree to stop fighting for the day.

Achilles is informed of his cousin's death by Eudorus and vows revenge after striking Eudorus. Wary that Achilles will surely seek Vengeance, Hector shows his wife Andromache a secret tunnel beneath Troy; should he die and the city fall, he instructs her to take their child and any survivors out of the city to Mount Ida.

The next day, Achilles arrives outside Troy and challenges Hector. Hector says his goodbyes to his loved ones, including his wife and son.

The two duel outside the gates and initially appear evenly matched, but Hector is slowly worn down until Achilles lands the killing blow.

Achilles then drags his corpse back to the Trojan beach. Priam, in disguise, sneaks into the camp and implores Achilles to return Hector's body for a proper funeral.

Ashamed of his actions, Achilles agrees and also states that Hector was the best he had ever fought. He allows Briseis to return to Troy with Priam, promising a twelve-day truce so that Hector's funeral rites may be held in peace.

He also orders his men to return home without him after apologizing to Eudorus for striking him. Agamemnon declares that he will take Troy regardless of the cost.

Concerned, Odysseus concocts a plan to infiltrate the city. After seeing a carving of a horse by a Greek soldier, he has the Greeks build a gigantic wooden horse as a peace offering and abandon the Trojan beach, hiding their ships in a nearby cove.

Despite objections from Paris who requests for it to be burned down, Priam orders the horse be brought into the city after Archeptolemus views it as a gift intended for calming the gods.

A Trojan scout later finds the Greek ships hiding in the cove, but he was quickly shot down as he was about to alert the city.

That night, Greeks hiding inside the horse emerge, attacking the sleeping Trojans by surprise and open the city gates for the Greek army, commencing the Sack of Troy.

While Andromache and Helen guide the Trojans to safety through the tunnel, Paris gives the Sword of Troy to a young boy named Aeneas , instructing him to protect the Trojans and find them a new home.

Agamemnon kills Priam and captures Briseis, who then kills Agamemnon using a concealed knife in her hand. Achilles fights his way through the city and reunites with Briseis after killing the two Greek soldiers.

Paris, seeking to avenge his brother, shoots an arrow through Achilles' heel and then several into his body.

Achilles extracts all the arrows but the one in his heel. He then bids farewell to Briseis, and watches her flee with Paris before dying.

In the aftermath, Troy is finally taken by the Greeks and a funeral is held for Achilles, where Odysseus personally cremates his body, while the surviving Trojans flee to Mount Ida.

The role eventually went to Rose Byrne. So I was put in Troy. I made my own mistakes in it. What am I trying to say about Troy? I could not get out of the middle of the frame.

It was driving me crazy. Das Boot is one of the all-time great films. But somewhere in it, Troy became a commercial kind of thing.

There was no mystery. Composer Gabriel Yared originally worked on the score for Troy for over a year, having been hired by the director, Wolfgang Petersen.

Tanja Carovska provided vocals on various portions of the music, as she later would on composer James Horner's version of the soundtrack.

However, the reactions at test screenings which used an incomplete version of the score were negative, and in less than a day Yared was off the project without a chance to fix or change his music.

He used Carovska's vocals again and also included traditional Eastern Mediterranean music and brass instruments. Horner also collaborated with American singer-songwriter Josh Groban and lyricist Cynthia Weil to write an original song for the film's end credits.

The product of this collaboration, "Remember", was performed by Groban with additional vocals by Carovska. The soundtrack for the film was released on May 11, , through Reprise Records.

The score of the film was changed dramatically, with many of the female vocals being cut. An addition to the music is the use of Danny Elfman 's theme for Planet of the Apes during the pivotal fight between Hector and Achilles in front of the Gates of Troy.

Josh Groban's song was removed from the end credits as well. Various shots were recut and extended. For instance, the love scene between Helen and Paris was reframed to include more nudity of Diane Kruger.

The love scene between Achilles and Briseis is also extended. Only one scene was removed: the scene where Helen tends to the wound of Paris is taken out.

The battle scenes were also extended, depicting more violence and gore, including much more of Ajax's bloody rampage on the Trojans during the initial attack by the Greek Army.

Perhaps most significant was the sacking of Troy, barely present in the theatrical cut, but shown fully here, depicting the soldiers raping women and murdering babies.

Characters were given more time to develop, specifically Priam and Odysseus , the latter being given a humorous introduction scene.

More emphasis is given to the internal conflict in Troy between the priests, who believe in omens and signs from the gods to determine the outcome of the war, and military commanders, who believe in practical battle strategies to achieve victory.

Lastly, bookend scenes were added: the beginning being a soldier's dog finding its dead master and the end including a sequence where the few surviving Trojans escape to Mount Ida.

In one of the commentary sequences, the film's writer, David Benioff, said that when it came to deciding whether to follow The Iliad or to do what was best for the film, they always decided with what was best for the film.

Troy was released on DVD on January 4, This made Troy one of the most expensive films produced in modern cinema.

It was screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It was the 8th highest-grossing film of and currently is in the top highest-grossing films of all time.

Feb 26, I wasn't keen on reviewing Troy originally, but long story short it was on the Space channel over five times this weekend and I ended up giving up my grudges against this film and sitting through it once or twice because there was nothing else to do and I wasn't motivated enough to climb the flight of stairs to my Blu-Ray collection so here goes.

Troy cashes in as a large-scale film mainly because of it's keen casting choices which included Diane Kruger, Brad Pitt, and snagging two of the Fellowship alumni from Lord of the Rings in the form of Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom who directed a lot of hype towards this film, but surprisingly it wasn't as lackluster as I remember it being the last time I watched it back in Much like the previous Helen of Troy miniseries which came out a year prior, Troy tells a slightly different version of the tale of the union between Helen and Paris and how it caused the fall of the ancient city of Troy.

Is it because her loins throb with passion for a hero? No, because she tells him: "I don't want a hero. I want a man I can grow old with.

If you believe Helen of Troy could actually tell Paris anything remotely like that, you will probably also agree that the second night he slipped into her boudoir, she told him, "Last night was a mistake.

The seduction of Helen is the curtain-raiser for the main story, which involves vast Greek armies laying siege to the impenetrable city.

Chief among their leaders is Achilles, said to be the greatest warrior of all time, but played by Brad Pitt as if he doesn't believe it.

If Achilles was anything, he was a man who believed his own press releases. Heroes are not introspective in Greek drama, they do not have second thoughts, and they are not conflicted.

Achilles is all of these things. He mopes on the flanks of the Greek army with his own independent band of fighters, carrying out a separate diplomatic policy, kind of like Ollie North.

He thinks Agamemnon is a poor leader with bad strategy and doesn't really get worked up until his beloved cousin Patroclus Garrett Hedlund is killed in battle.

Patroclus, who looks a little like Achilles, wears his helmet and armor to fool the enemy, and until the helmet is removed everyone thinks that Achilles has been slain.

So dramatic is that development that the movie shows perhaps , men in hand-to-hand combat, and then completely forgets them in order to focus on the Patroclus battle scene, with everybody standing around like during a fight on the playground.

Pitt is a good actor and a handsome man, and he worked out for six months to get buff for the role, but Achilles is not a character he inhabits comfortably.

Say what you will about Charlton Heston and Victor Mature , but one good way to carry off a sword-and-sandal epic is to be filmed by a camera down around your knees, while you intone quasi-formal prose in a heroic baritone.

Pitt is modern, nuanced, introspective; he brings complexity to a role where it is not required. By treating Achilles and the other characters as if they were human, instead of the larger-than-life creations of Greek myth, director Wolfgang Petersen miscalculates.

What happens in Greek myth cannot happen between psychologically plausible characters. That's the whole point of myth.

Great films like Michael Cacoyannis' " Elektra ," about the murder of Agamemnon after the Trojan War, know that and use a stark dramatic approach that is deliberately stylized.

Of course, "Elektra" wouldn't work for a multiplex audience, but then maybe it shouldn't. The best scene in the movie has Peter O'Toole creating an island of drama and emotion in the middle of all that plodding dialogue.

He plays old King Priam of Troy, who at night ventures outside his walls and into the enemy camp, surprising Achilles in his tent.

Achilles has defeated Priam's son Hector in hand-to-hand combat before the walls of Troy, and dragged his body back to camp behind his chariot.

Now Priam asks that the body be returned for proper preparation and burial. This scene is given the time and attention it needs to build its mood, and we believe it when Achilles tells Priam, "You're a far better king than the one who leads this army.

As for the Greek cities themselves, a cliche from the old Hollywood epics has remained intact. This is the convention that whenever a battle of great drama takes place, all the important characters have box seats for it.

When Achilles battles Hector before the walls of Troy, for example, Priam and his family have a sort of viewing stand right at the front of the palace, and we get the usual crowd reaction shots, some of them awkward closeups of actresses told to look grieved.

In a way, "Troy" resembles " The Alamo. Both are defeated because of faulty night watchmen. Let's get your review verified.

However, unlike the miniseries which is vastly different in terms of story and character personalities, Troy focuses more on the characters and their choice rather than being centred on the events themselves which led up to the Sacking of Troy.

The more human-centred approach works well with the different spectrums of versatility the main cast brings to the table, but all things aside the film itself is decently acted most of the way through and the chemistry between Bloom's Paris and Kruger's Helen is evident, as is the platonic relationship between Pitt's Achilles and Bean's Odysseus with Bean giving the film a more world-weary approach which somewhat balances the romance between Helen and Paris although the two lovers and Odysseus barely cross paths within the film itself.

The film itself isn't on the same caliber as the opus of Lord of the Rings, or even a few other films based in Ancient times, but it holds up more proficiently than most people give it credit for, and for that I will say that in most ways, it's an okay film.

Just not watched five times in a row. Kal X. A Super Reviewer. May 15, I just saw this in one of our mythology classes. I can't remember most of it but I do recall the good looks of Eric Bana.

All in all, I think it's not that bad but it will never manage to be as stunning as the other epic movies like Braveheart and Gladiator.

Maymay A Super Reviewer. Apr 23, Troy is an overlooked epic that doesn't deserve the rotten rating it received. While it certainly doesn't have big emotion that we would expect from these kind of movies.

That doesn't make it a bad movie, just a bad epic. Troy is an adaptation of Homer's great epic, the film follows the assault on Troy by the united Greek forces and chronicles the fates of the men involved.

If it was, we would of had babies being killed, an important character shot in the knee and immediately dying, and lots of special effects for the Greek gods and their involvement.

All of these would have made it more implausible than it already is. Depending whether or not if you read the story of Troy by Homer will determine how much you like this movie.

Since Troy has great material to work from you can expect a lot great dialogue to enhance a certain scene.

One problem with the writing is that it doesn't have any big emotion behind it. This is mostly due to poor character development, the movie tells us happened before the battle of Troy instead of showing us, and the idea that thousands of men dying for two men dispute over a woman who is not properly developed nor is it properly build up is plausible enough.

Despite not having the emotions we would expect from a epic, it's still good entertainment even without it. The cast on the other hand is well put together, except Brad Pitt character.

Brad Pitt delivers a good performance, but his character is just not likable since he's basically a heartless killing machine who other enjoyment comes from sex.

My favorite actor from the cast was easily Eric Bana. He's the only actor who came out both great and enjoyable at the same time. He was just terrific, a blast to watch, and was actually talented enough to make me care about his character death despite the so-so writing he got.

As for the face that launched a thousand ship, Diane Kruger, in my opinion at-least, she's not worth dying for. The battle scenes look great, but aren't impressive themselves.

That's not entirely bad as we do see some great cinematography of the battle scenes and are for memorable in opinion. Troy is simply just a bad epic, but it has all the making of a good movie.

With great production values and effort put into Troy it's certainly worth a watch even if comes a little short from your expecting from a epic.
